Joseph Bernard was born between 1703 and 1707 in Beaubassin, Acadia to René Bernard and Madeleine Doucet. Genealogist Stephen White places his birth first before brother Michel also born after 1703 and before 1707, probably based on the order they are listed in 1714. He is the younger brother of Joseph, born in 1692 and who died young.[1][2]
He married Marie Gaudet about 1729 [sic], at Beaubassin, NS, Canada[1] corrected to 1725.[3][1][4]"Acadian Church Records", vol. II; Milton P. and Norma Gaudet Rieder; Metairie, LA: Authors, 1976; Note: Covers year 1712-1748. Also available as microfiche #6087649. Includes transcripts of Beaubassin, Acadia church registers, now at the Archives of the Mayor of La Rochelle, Charente Maritime, France; p. 22
Text: Jean Baptiste BERNARD, son of deceased Rene BERNARD & Magdelaine DOUCET of this parish, married on 28 Nov 1719 Cecile GODET, daughter of Claude GODET & Marguerite BLOU of this parish. Witnesses: the parents and many friends.
He died after 1765 in Quebec, Canada. Stephen White states only that he died after the census of 1752, [1] but Janet Jehn found a record from 1755 where he sold some land.[6] and Bona Arsenault's finds him on the census of 1765 at Chaleur Bay. [7]Rene Bernard says he died about 1781 at Ristigouche.[5]
Research Notes
No burial record found in Drouin for Quebec.
It is assumed that Marie Josephe Gaudet passed away some time before 1752 since the marriage with Marguerite happened in 1752 (see below). Given the lack of information available at this point in time I am not 100% convinced this is the case.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA test-takers in his direct paternal line.
Mitochondrial DNA test-takers in the direct maternal line:
Bernard-2414 and Bernard-43 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, same approx birthdate (was born 1703-1707). Same parents. Same first wife and marriage date and place. Second wife is supported by Stephen White source. Death dates are not inconsistent, though no burial was found for him in Quebec.
