Biography

George Bernardeau was born January 24, 1691 in Saint-Mars-du-Desert near Nantes in the Pays-de-Loire area of France to Jacques Bernardeau and Renee Marzeliere and baptized the following day at Saint-Médards Church. His uncle, George Marzeliere was his godfather.1

On February 24, 1716 he married Marie Courgeon at Saint Pierre Church in Carquefou. By this time his father had passed away, but his mother was present at the wedding, as was his godfather & uncle George Marzeliere.2

The couple had at least thirteen children together over about 21 years while living in Carquefou... several with the same names:[1]

  • George, born and baptized 28 Feb 1718 *Jean, baptized 14 May 1719
  • Marie, born 16 May 1721 and baptized the next day
  • Jeanne Bernardeau baptized 19 Dec 1723
  • George, baptized 13 Dec 1725.
  • Jacquette, born and buried 13 May 1727
  • Julienne, born 30 Nov 1728 and baptized the next day
  • Perrine, baptized 4 May 1730 and buried 20 Jul 1730
  • Anne, born 25 Jul 1731 and baptized the next day
  • Jacques, born and baptized 10 Mar 1734
  • Jacquette, born and baptized 8 Aug 1736 and buried 16 Aug 1736
  • Unnamed baby boy born, baptized, and buried on 19 Jun 1738
  • Perrine, born and baptized 9 Nov 1739.

Seven months after Marie Courgeon was buried in 1745, George remarried to a widow named Elizabeth Dupas. She had been married to a man named Rene Robert.3

Although only 73 years old when he died, George's age was estimated at 88 when he was buried at St. Pierre's Church in Carquefou on 17 August 1764. He had died the day before in "La Renaudiniere" according to the burial record. 4 There is a village by such name in Maine-et-Loire, Pays-de-Loire, France, but it seems more likely that he died in La Remaudiere which is in Loire-Atlantique like Saint-Mars-du-Desert.
