Aline (Bernstein) Saarinen was an art critic and television journalist.

Aline was born on 25 March 1914 in New York, New York.[1] She was the daughter of Allen Milton Bernstein and Irma Lewyn.[2] Her parents were of German Jewish descent.[3]

She married Joseph H. Louchheim on 17 June 1935.[4] They had two sons, Donald and Harry. [5] Joseph and Aline divorced in 1951.[6]

Aline graduated from Vassar College.[7] She received an A.M. degree from New York University's Institute of Fine Arts in 1941.[8] She began working for Art News magazine in 1944, and was managing editor from 1946 to 1948.[9] She was associate art editor at the New York Times from 15 December 1947 to February 1954, and was associate art critic until 1959.[10]

Aline married Eero Saarinen in 1954.[11] They had a son, Eames.[12]

In 1963, she became art and architecture editor for NBC's Sunday show and art critic for NBC's Today show.[13] She became a correspondent for NBC News in October 1964.[14] She became head of NBC's Paris News Bureau in 1971.[15] She was hostess and moderator of the NBC program "For Women Only.".[16]

She won the International Award for Best Foreign Criticism in 1951, the Frank Jewett Mather Award for best newspaper art criticism in 1953, and the American Federation of Arts Award for best newspaper criticism in 1956.[17]

She received honorary degrees from the University of Michigan and Russell Sage College.[18]

Aline died on 13 July 1972 at the DeWitt Nursing Home in New York, New York.[19]
