Carl "Charles" Alexander Berntson was born on April 2, 1870, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Karen Hendricksen and Alexander Berntsen. He married Augusta (Droese) Merkel Berntson on October 11, 1890, in his hometown. They had two children during their marriage.
