Biography

Lewellyn Berry is a part of US Black heritage.

Lewellyn was born in 1876 to John and Nancy Berry in Hampton, Virginia. His parents were among the founders of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) church in Virginia. He attended Hampton Institute, Kittrel College and Wilberforce University. He preached at various AME churches in Virginia and North Carolina until 1933 when he was elected as Secretary of the Department of Missions of the AME Church, a position he held until his death in 1954. He would travel extensively in that position visiting West and South Africa, West Indies, South America and Canada.^[1]

In 1880, 4-year-old Lewellyn was one of four children in the home of John and Nancy Berry. The family was farming at Wythe in Elizabeth City County.^[2]
