Note

Note:  !BIRTH: 1900 Census shows the father of Flora (Charles Edward Berry) was born in Illinois. Shiryl Gurn's family cookbook (which contained a family history record) shows Charles Edward BERRY was born March 16, 1831 in Ohio, and claimed to have served in the 103rd Illinois (Civil War).
Note from Myron Anderson: It looks like maybe Charles/Elliott Berry and his brother James Berry went to Iowa in 1870 in between the Illinois and Iowa census. Charles is on the 1870 Ag census in Mason City, Illinois but that was with the 1869 crop year. Duffy Berry and his mom Sarah were still in Illinois on the 1870 census, but they soon moved to Lincoln Twp, Story county, Iowa, which is just a short distance from the village of Illinois Grove in Liberty Twp, Marshall county, Iowa where Charles and Caroline Berry owned 10 acres from 1878-1882. Brother James Berry died in 1877 and is buried in Bevins Grove, just south of there, along with his mother Sarah Berry who died in 1879.
Ethel B. Morrison remembers her mother, Flora, having a younger brother and sister named John and Daisy, which no one mentions anymore. But I believe these may actually have been the name of Flora's niece and nephew born to her sister Dora. There is reason to believe Charles Berry may have been the father (and grandfather).
RESEARCH-LEADS: There is a Charles Berry born in the 1860's in either Illinois or England (some siblings born one place, some the other). His parents were Thomas A. BERRY and Mary Ann WINSOR. They may have lived in Fulton county, Illinois before moving to Seward county, Nebraska. (this information received in an email from cgeorgen@wave.sheridan.wy.us -- 25 Feb. 1997)
~RESEARCH-LEADS: from the family history "cookbook" belonging to Shiryl Gurn [Taxitaxi@aol.com] the following people (relatives) are included: Raymond and Norma Berry (Pritchett, Colorado); Asher and family in Idaho; Glenda and family in California; Danny & family in California; Mildred & family in Iowa; Art and Roxie Berry Dowell (Pritchett, Colorado) (719) 523-4852 -- 223 Irving St. Pritchett, CO.
RESEARCH-LEADS: There were several Berry families that were in Lake county, Illinois (Waukegan Township in 1877) -- received in email from Lungaro712@aol.com -- 2 Mar 1997.
MARRIAGE: the marriage place came from information received from Shiryl Gurn.
1870 Illinois Ag Census -- at Mason City, Mason City Township, Mason county, Illinois
#2 Isaac Simpkins, age 42, 2 horses, 2 Swiss, livestock worth $200; $220 of Indian corn.
#10 Charles Berry, age 65, $3250 value of farm; $100 implements; 2 horses, 1 milk cow, 2 Swiss, livestock worth $300; $60 spring wheat and $1200 Indian corn.
#35 John Newberry, age 80, $4000 value of farm; $150 implements; 4 horses, 3 milk cows, 1 calf, livestock worth $500; $200 spring wheat and $2000 Indian corn.

From Myron Anderson: The James Berry grave I found was in the Bivens Grove Cemetery at Bivens Grove in Liberty Township, Marshall County [Iowa]. I took the info from the tombstone there. The grave is in the SE corner of the cemetery. Also an unreadable marker for a girl that probably was a daughter of Charles and Caroline. The markers were of the "crude"type probably not made by a more craft type person. Also an almost unreadable one for a Mrs. Berry.

!DEATH: A death date of 24 Dec. 1900 came from the family records of Shiryl Gurn (and an obituary which I can't locate)[Taxitaxi@aol.com] Myron Anderson lists it as 14 Dec. 1900 based on what Caroline Berry recorded in her family Bible.
FAMILY MYSTERY: Myron Anderson of Windor, Colorado wonders if the sons Samuel Bryant and Issac Elliot Berry aren't the same son (they have the same death date). Isaac Elliot Berry is buried next to his grandfather, Samuel Newberry in the old Swing Grove Cemetery. Myron wrote "Samuel Bryant died about the same date as his half-brother Isaac, but I can't find where he is buried or where his father Andrew is buried." Charles E. Berry could be an alias name for Elliot Berry, a Civil War deserter who disappeared.
Also from Myron Anderson: "In the Veteran Census of 1890 Charles E.
Berry claimed to have served in the Civil War in the 103rd Illinois Infantry of Company A but there is no proof. The 103rd was raised entirely of men from Fulton county. The only Berry men in Company A were Elliot Berry and John Berry. They were from the township of Putman in Fulton county, Illinois. In the muster records and other records of the regiment, they were born in Knox county, Ohio. Elliot was born in the township of Brown in Knox county, Ohio. Both Elliot and John deserted the Army on 10 March 1863 while at Jackson, Tennessee before the company moved into Mississippi. John was first turned in while in Illinois as a deserter for a $30 reward. He deserted again and was caught and court- martialed and was to be shot. President Lincoln rescinded the order and John spent the rest of the war at the Dry Tortugas Prison off of Florida. John came back to Fulton County Illinois and got married. No records have ever been found on Elliot Berry. Sarah was with Joseph Berry in Knox County, Ohio. With them were James, John A., Hanna E., Charlotte E., and Clark Irving D. (Duffy) Berry. Elliott was with the family of Nelson Harding. No Charles E. Berry! The 1860 census found Sarah Berry in Fulton county, Illinois. With her were as follows: James, Elliot, John, Hannah, Elizabeth, and Duffey. No Charles E. Berry! Elliot was also listed with the family of James McNair and John with the family of George Kefauvar. The 1870 census of Fulton county had Sarah and her son Duffey. John Berry and his family were in Mason county near Samuel Newberry. I don't know where the family of Charles and Caroline Berry were in 1870--either in Iowa or Illinois. So I can find nothing on Charles Berry before his marriage in 1868. According to the info Caroline Berry recorded in her Bible, Charles was born 16 March 1831. It looks suspicious that maybe Elliot Berry and Charles Berry might be the same person except that Elliot was born in 1838. Maybe Andrew Bryant was Elliot Berry?; I find it strange that Charles would have just about the correct muster dates and etc. for "his Civil War Duty," 25 years after the war was over."
"A relative in California gave me a copy of the obituary for Duffy Berry when he died in Cass county, Illinois on 2 Dec 1912. The only sibling who was listed was "the Army deserter John Berry" was was living in Lipente, Arkansas."
"It is also odd that Andrew Bryant died in about 1867-1868, in a fire, but also after the census of 1860, James, Hannah E. and Charlotte E. Berry seem to have disappeared...I have seen a photo copy of a supposed photo of Charles Berry. In a way my father and his brother Andrew [grandsons of Andrew Bryant] favor the photo of Charles Berry....It is my unproven belief that Charles Berry is connected to the family of Sarah Berry. I hope to trace the whereabouts of the families of Duffy and John Berry."
DEATH: Myron Anderson's records show Charles Edward Berry died 14 December 1900.
