Biography

Henry Berry was born in 1652, in Sittenburne Parish, Old Rappanhannock county, Virginia, a son of Henry Berry, who immigrated from England and died on Occupacia Creek in Old Rappanhannock county in 1677.

Henry inherited the homestead to his father. He married Sarah Harper, born circa 1658, in Sittinbourne Parish, a daughter of William Harper, and Mary Gray. They and became the parents of at least six children before he died October 7, 1695, in St Mary's Parish, Richmond county, Virginia.

  • Richmond County Court 7th of October 1696 The Last Will and Testament of HENRY BERRY being presented to this Court by SARAH BERRY, Executrix therein named, the said Will was proved by the Oaths of ALEXANDER SPENCE and JAMES WOFENDALL and Probate thereof to the said SARAH Executrix. [1]

Note: In 1677, Sittingbourne was divided, and St. Mary's Parish was formed. Both still lay on both sides of the Rappahannock River, but now St. Mary's was the westernmost parish. In 1704, Sittingbourne was again divided as the south side of the river became St. Anne's Parish, and the north side retained the name Sittingbourne. In 1732, Sittingbourne was abolished when the parish was divided to become Hanover Parish in King George and the new Lunenburg Parish in Richmond County. [2]

After his Henry's death, his widow, Sarah Harper, married secondly, John Spiller, born before 1650, in Northumberland county, Virginia. On September 9, 1714, John Spiller and Sarah, his wife, and only heir at Law of William Harper, late of St. Ann's Parish, Essex county, Virginia gave George Plye Berry, "son of the said Sarah, for natural love and affection, but more especially in consideration of three thousand pound of food Tobacco," the plantation where William Harper dwelt at the time of his death, upon Occupation Crek, adj. the land of Richard Mathews, deceased, etc. [3]

Researchers Notes

His Find A Grave calls him "Sir John Henry Berry, II" and indicates that he was born in Devon, England and died in 1689, in Richmond, Henrico county, Virginia. [4]
