Biography

William Crawford Berry, son of Thornton and Rachel Bell Berry, was born 1835 and died August 22 1862. He married Frances Louisa Phillips Kennerly Hanger. He is buried in Augusta Stone Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Augusta County, Fort Defiance, VA. "During the Civil War, William enlisted in Co. E, Virginia 1st Cavalry Regiment, Apr. 19, 1961. He was killed at Catlett's Station, VA when General J. E. B. Stuart raided General Pope's headquarters and supply depot there. Stuart's men attempted to burn the railway bridge but were unsuccessful due to a heavy thunderstorm. Rank at death - 2nd Corporal." [1]
