Biography

This profile is part of the Clafton Name Study.

Sarah Berry was born about 1833 in Ossett, Yorkshire, England and baptised on 31st Mar 1833 at Holy and Undivided Trinity, Ossett, daughter of Joseph and Mary Berry. At that time Joseph was a Clothier and the family lived in Ossett.[1]

On 8th Jun 1852, Sarah Berry, aged 19, married James Clafton, aged 22, Weaver, at Sandal Magna St Helen, Yorkshire. His father was Jonathan Clafton, Weaver, and her father was Joseph Berry, Clothier, and both families were living in Crigglestone, Wakefield, Yorkshire. Their witnesses were Thomas and Ann Schorey.[2]

On 7th Apr 1861, Sarah Clafton, aged 28, head of house and married, was a Woollen Rag Sorter and living with her two sons William and Joseph and a boarder John Berry (likely her brother) at Rosemary Lane, Ossett, Yorkshire. Her birthplace was Ossett, Yorkshire.[3]

By the 1861 Census Sarah is head of house and married, but James is not present.[3] It appears that James left Sarah and emigrated to the USA where he remarried.
