Notes
Note: Etienne Bertel was a cabinet maker who lived in New Orleans on the corner of Toulouse and Charters streets. Later he moved his shop and residence to Rampart Street, and he must have retired, for he iscited as a gentleman. During the war he was the immediate in command of the Sixth Battery, which was under the overall command of Brigadier General Garrigue Flaujac (jeac). Etienne was a member and officer of various Masonic Lodges, such as the Senior Warden and Grandmaster of L'Etoile Polaire. He ran for the seat of city councilman of the First District in New Orleans, but was narrowly defeated by M. Gordon and J. T. Preston. Entienne and other veterans were the prime organizers of a parade to celebrate the first anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans in 1816. He died in 1836 at sea on theAmerican boat "La Tolma', on the night of July 3-4. He was travelling with his mistress, Louise Vaudery. In his will he freed his 7 slaves, and left his material possessions to Louise Vaudery. His debts were paid off, and Louise lived out her life with the Bertel relatives in Bordeaux. The original documents of all these details are all in French, some have been translated.
daves note: It seems these people were rich by todays standards, and it was normal to have marridge contracts, detailed wills, notarized statements about just about anything. And every document had tobe duly recorded, numbered and have some official stamps. But these documents could be anywhere, church records, "civil registrations", military records, etc. And probably a lot were lost.
These are slave records:
