He was the eldest son of Montagu Bertie, 6th Earl of Abingdon and Elizabeth Lavinia Vernon-Harcourt.[1] He was born on the 13th of May 1836 at Hanover Square, Mayfair, London, England.[2] He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England.[2]
The earl was married twice, firstly to Caroline Theresa Towneley, the eldest daughter and co-heir of Charles Towneley of Towneley, Lancashire, and the Lady Caroline Harriett Molyneux, on the 10th of July 1858 at Bavarian Roman Catholic Chapel, Warwick Street, London, England.[2] At St. James Westminster, London, England.[3] He married, secondly, Gwendoline Mary Dormer, daughter of Lt.-Gen. Hon. James Charlemange Dormer C.B. and Ella Frances Catherine Alison, on the 16th of October 1883 at Roman Catholic Cathedral, Portsmouth, Hampshire, England.[2][4]
The earl served as Lt-Col Commander of the Berkshire Militia (1863-1880) and thereafter as honorary colonel. He also served as Justice of the Peace for Berkshire and Oxfordshire and held a Doctor of Laws. The earl served as high steward of Abingdon.
The earl died on the 10th of March 1928 at the age of 91 at Oaken Holt, Oxfordshire, England.[5][6]He was buried on the 14th of March 1928 at Abingdon Abbey, Abingdon, Oxfordshire, England.[5][7]
