Biography

Margaret Bertram is born on April 24, 1842 in Scarborough Township, Canada West. Her parents are Andrew Bertram (1812>1871) and Margaret Glendinning (1819<1861) [1][2].

Margaret’s father, Andrew, was born in Scotland in 1812. He is a farmer in Scarborough. Margaret’s mother, Margaret Glendinning, was also born in Scotland. Margaret Bertram is the grand niece of Mary Glendinning --- Mary (Mary Thomson) is known as the “mother of Scarborough” as she was the first European woman to move into the township [3].

In the 1861 census, Margaret Bertram is 19 years old, living with her father, who is a widower, and three siblings on a farm in Scarborough [4].

On January 23, 1862 Margaret marries Andrew Paterson (1837-1898) in Scarborough. They have seven children:

• Margaret Isabella Paterson 1862-1899 + (1883) John Henry Wood 1859-1957

• Andrew Paterson 1865-1933

• Violet Paterson 1867-1929 + (1) (1890) Alfred E. McPherson 1868-? + (2) Alfred Edwin Marks 1867-1943

• Euphemia Paterson 1870-1934

• Malcolm McGillivray Paterson 1875-1950 + (1905) Annie Cattheta Wright 1883-1941

• Joan Etta Paterson 1877-1955 + (1911) Samuel Little 1878-1914

• Mabel Cecelia Paterson 1879-1968

Margaret and Andrew have four children in the 1871 census: Margaret (8), Andrew (5), Violet (3) and Euphemia (less than a year old) [6]. The family is also on the farm in the 1881 census and there are now seven children, plus Andrew’s father and two of Andrew’s siblings [7]. In 1891 there are only five children left at home [8].

Andrew dies in 1898 and is buried in the cemetery at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Bendale, Scarborough. In the 1901 census records Margaret is shown as the head of the family and as a farmer [9]. She has with her two sons – the 34-year old Andrew and the 24-year old Malcolm – who presumably are doing the heavy work on the farm. And she has three daughters living with her. In the 1911 census records Margaret is 68 years old and her son, Andrew, is now shown as the head of the household [10].

Margaret dies on March 15, 1914 and is buried with Andrew at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Bendal [11]. Three children are buried with them.

The children were all born in U Canada. The religion appears to be “C of S” (not clear) which presumably is “Church of Scotland.”. They live in a 1.5 story frame house.
