Amable Bertrand Sr., the family progenitor, was born in Canada on April 19, 1739. He came to Louisiana as a young man, first going to the Point Coupee area where he married Anastasie Guenard on Feb. 9, 1766. The couple had several children.
Following the death of his wife in 1791, Amable moved to the Opelousas Poste and married Anastasie Aucoin. The couple settled on the Prairie Ronde in what would later become part of St. Landry Parish. That union produced another five children.
Amable died on Sept. 27,1802, leaving behind a large clan of Bertrands. Many of his descendants live in that same area today.
