Dear Alan & Rose,
Ona sa tanan kamosta camo hinaot onta nga tagaan kita sa Macagagahum sa mga maayong panglawas cay aron macasogacod kita sa atong manga nag calain-lain nga bolohaton ning calibutan. Aco tigulang I'm 85 years old and I retired as a head teacher at the age of 65 years old.
Bandin (Blandino Tenio, Papang's first cousin on his mother side) was at home with your letter. We read it and found nice because you are interested to know our kinship. I can tell you the only thing that I know and remember. Sa bata pa aco adad-on aco coyog sa acong eya-an (aunt) ug si Manang Edang Salazar sa pagpamiesta sa Cambarong didto sa ca Manong Eto Aden (Modesto Salazar) cada Mayo catorse ug sa pag-adto namo didto mo tabang cami sa manga bolohaton cay daghan man sila si Manong Eto ug visita nga taga Sawang. Si Manong Eto ug si Manang Edang egsoon man ug acong oyang grandmother) nga si Dalmacia Salazar. Acong madomdoman mao ra kini sila:
1. Modesto Salazar 2. Andres Salazar - married in Jagna - Nong Modesto's brother living in Jagna. 3. Dalmacia Salazar - my great grandmother, the mother of Mama's mother 4. The father of Dadoy (Bernardo) Salazar and Mino (Herminio) Salazar, all died (Nong Modesto's brother also.) 5. Maxima Salazar (Manang Edang not married. She lived together with Nong Eto Aden your grandfather where they lived in Sawang, Guindulman, Bohol.
We do not carry the family name Salazar because Dalmacia Salazar being a girl carried the family name of her husband (Besas). Dalmacia Salazar is the mother of my Mama's mother, Petronila Besas. I was married to Hugo Peligrino from Cambarong with eight children 4 boys and 4 girls (one boy died), so we have seven children namely:
1. Alfredo Piligrino, born July 10, 1927, married, living in Cambarong with one child now in Australia with his wife and 2 children. 2. Resurreccion Piligrino - May 1, 1928, Division Supervisor. 3. Tody Piligrino - living in Bayogan, Agusan del Sur, Jan. 1, 1930. 4. Lilia Piligrino - a midwife, Nov. 10, 1932. 5. Hugo Piligrino, Jr. - Oct. 5, 1934, married. 6. Caridad Piligrino, a teacher living with me, March 20, 1936. 7. Maria Piligrino - a teacher living with me, Jan. 14, 1942.
Ug ang acong mahimomdoman nga si Bebing Salazar (Veronica Salazar, the youngest of our aunts, No. 13 in the Family Tree) man ang inyong kinamanghuran ug kini siya naminyo ni Victor Bernales ug wala sila anac. Si Anhing Kicay Salazar (Enrica Salazar, No. 7 in the Family Tree) naminyo ni Anhing Margarito Timbal sa taga Bato, wala sila anac.
Nong Eto was living in Cambarong with the children. Sa pagkasamad ni Nong Eto ug bulang cay mamolang man cadto ug ma domingo, (and I've always wondered why most of the Salazars are gamblers - now I know! Our grandfather Modesto was a sabongero! Nasamad pa gyud ug bulang!) didto sa bulangan busa ning balhin sila pagpuyo sa Sawang cay ma maestra na man pod si Anhing Kicay ug nagipon na sila si Manang Edang cay dalaga man siya.
Pasayloa nga kining akong sulat nag rambling rambling tungod cay dinali dali man pagcasolata. May God bless us all.
Love from Tia Betiang Pelegrino and Children.
(I'm still kicking myself for not having replied to this letter. In 1991 we were still living with John and Inday in San Leandro and I was working at the courthouse in Palo Alto, 29 miles away. I guess I was just too busy commuting (I remember leaving at 5:30 in the morning to miss the heavy traffic and get to Palo Alto in time for work) and earning a living. She wrote this when she was 85 years old so that would make her 97 years old now, and I don't know if she's still alive. Her letter tells us of our Grandfather Modesto's brothers and sisters but did not mention anything about Modesto's father and mother, our great grandparents.
