Hi Caroline,

Thank you for the questions about Richard King https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/King-11039. I sent you a private email also regarding his life, and the research. I do not recall seeing Mr. Johnson in the sources. You are also welcome to browse the sources to see if you find him. .

Thanks for your interest in Texas Ranchers and Richard King. .

Hey Caroline,

Thanks again for signing the Honor Code some time ago. I wanted to check in with you to see how things are going. How do you like WikiTree so far? Have the tips in the New Member How To Pages been helpful or have they left you with questions?

I see you have not created a profile yet from your Gedcom. Will you do it via the gedcompare or proceed with manual creations?

Please let me know if you have any questions about WikiTree. To contact me, log in to WikiTree and go to your profile. Use the Reply link below my comment to be sure that I will be notified. You can also click my name to send a private message, or post a comment on my profile page if you really prefer. It's really is great to have you on board.

P.S. To find reliable sources for your profiles, go to the Family Tree & Tools tab; select Genealogy Research and scroll down near the bottom of that list and select Research with RootsSearch. There are over 20 websites to access from there.

Michel, I have way too many match suggestions to go through. Is this correct: If I delete the Gedcom can I add people individually to my tree?
Well, you still need to find out if there are matches. You should not create a new profile if one is already present. You should use that profile and possibly connect.

The Gedcom shows many suggestions, the same will show up when you create profiles manually. The advantage of doing it manually is that you have less clean up to do and that you can take care easier of all your references to the sources.

Hope this helps, Michel

Yes, that does help. It seems much more manageable adding persons one at a time.
Hello Caroline

Thank you for adding a GEDCOM. The GEDCOM does not automatically populate your tree. It generates a GEDCOMpare report which you work through, either accepting or rejecting all suggested matches. Once that has been done, you should see [add] buttons for each of the remaining names.

The GEDCOMpare process guide has tips on how to use the data in your file most efficiently.

For those using Chrome or Opera browsers, there is a tool that can help with the formatting of profiles which have been created through GEDCOM, so that you can concentrate on the research. You can read more about it in the WikiTree AGC FAQ.

If you have any questions about how WikiTree works, log into WikiTree and go to your profile. Use the ‘Reply’ link below my comment. Alternatively, click my name to visit my profile. From there, you can leave a comment, or send a private message.

Have fun

Thank you, Maureen, such a lot of information. This is all new to me, so thank you for offering to help, I'll need all the help I can get. I may have made a mistake already on GEDCompare. I can see that I am matched with myself, but I rejected the suggestions for my daughter P2 Leslie Christian Smith, my son P3 Marc Carmi Smith, and my father P4 John Christian George Beslock. Now they all say SEARCH. If that is OK, do I now make profiles for them so they will be added to my tree?
Hi Caroline

I'm assuming that the suggestions for your children etc. were invalid suggestions. If so, it's fine that you rejected them. Basically you have to go through the whole file, accepting or rejecting the suggestions for every person. I hope that your file is not very big!!

When you have done that for every person an "Add" button will appear for all the ones where you have a person in your GEDCOM file but there is no corresponding person in the WikiTree tree. Then you can add each of these unmatched people into WikiTree from your GEDCOM file, by pressing the "Add" button. It will create the profile for you automatically. However, you still need to look at each new profile and review the biography and the details of the profile as the GEDCOMPARE process is not perfect.

You are welcome to correspond with me by e-mail, by sending me a private message. Then I can send you some screenshots from my own GEDCOM file, if that would be helpful.

I am in a different time zone to you - I live in the UK so there may be a delay in getting my response.

Best wishes

Maureen ~ WikiTree Greeter

Thank you for the added info. Did you mean for me to contact you through a regular email provider? My email: [email address removed] if that will start the ball rolling. As for adding a whole bunch of people to the main tree, I think I'll try to handle what I have put in so far and see how I can stay up to date. Summer is coming, and that means a lot of time with the living, children, grands and great grands. I'm not sure yet what information is public and what private. I need some time to study it all.

Stay safe and thanks again,

Carol Smith

Oops, I guess the email thing didn't work!!!

So, is this the way we connect?

Carol Smith

Welcome Caroline,

Thank you for upgrading. I am pleased to welcome you as a member of the WikiTree family. Your contributions will go a long way to joining the world’s trees together.

I would suggest starting with the New Member How-To pages, they will save you a lot of time and frustration.

Please add as much information as you can, with sources, as it all helps to turn a “name” back into a person. I hope you enjoy the site as much as I do.

Thank you for adding your DNA to WikiTree. Getting the Best from DNA will tell you more about how DNA kits are used on WikiTree.

I am here to answer any question you have about WikiTree. To contact me, please log in to WikiTree and go to your profile. Use the ‘Reply’ link below my comment to be sure I will be notified. You can also click my name to send a private message, or post a comment, on my profile page.

Have fun collaborating on your ancestors

Thank you, this is a real challenge, so many bits and pieces. Apparently I still don't have my father's information in my profile. I'll just keep trying.
I am now looking for John Cary/Carey and his wife Lucinda. On the back of his portrait he, or someone else, wrote "Bornd. Dec.31.1798" His birth place appears in documents for family members as New York and Vermont. He and his wife, Lucinda, and their family lived in Cramahe Township, Northumberland, Ontario, Canada from perhaps 1837 until 1845. Several of his children remained in Canada, and two sons moved to Michigan, United States of America, and at one point he lived with a daughter in Connecticut and later with sons in St. Clair county, Michigan. Eventually I will be searching for relatives in British Isles, Germany and Poland
