When Beulah Benton Besse Dahlman Brown was born on July 27, 1883, in Jasper, Missouri, her father, Furow, was 26, and her mother, Ida, was 23. She went to teacher training and went off at age 23 to teach 3 years in Castle Rock, Cowlitz, Washington. She married the hardware store owner, Charles William Dahlman in 1911 in Multnomah, Oregon. They had one child during their marriage. She was largely responsible for setting up Castle Rock's first lending library. After he died in 1938 she continued to run the store but then moved to Missouri in 1946 and married Elmer Brown, a retired University professor. In late life she moved back to California to be near family, according to her obituary. She died on March 8, 1984, in La Verne, California, at the age of 100, and was buried in Castle Rock, Washington. [1] [2] [3] [4]
