Biography

This biography was auto-generated by a GEDCOM import.[1] It's a rough draft and needs to be edited.

It's possible there is a discrepancy in the birth record for Jane/Jean Best. The name Janet is used on this birth but never occurs again in all the other Census's or birth records for her children. It is always a mixture of Jane or Jean. The 1851 Census was the first to record, place of birth and on this it is stated that she was born at Eckford, Roxburghshire, Scotland. Not Hownam as Janet Best was recorded. Then there is the ages. In the 1841 Census she is 60. By the 1851 Census she is 70. On her Death record in 1865 she is recorded as being Jane Easton aged 84. All three of these ages suggests that she was born around 1780/81 and not anywhere near the 1772 that Janet Best was born. The parents on the Death record also are correct.

The Best family were around Eckford in the late 1770's early 1780's as Betty her sister was born 1777. Unfortunately I have been unable to trace a record of a birth in Eckford for a Jane Best. The records for that period are very untidy and poor.

A Janet Best married William Watson at Crailing two miles from Eckford, on the 24.6.1798. This is the same village that Jane and Robert were married in 4 years later. Janet (Best) Watson was a Midwife and died in Kelso on the first of September 1847 aged 76. Do the maths. This ties in with the current birth date against Jane's Wiki profile.

I believe that Janet Best was the oldest sister of Jane/Jean Best and that Jean was born as stated around 1780/81 at Eckford.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Jean by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jean:
