Biography

Matthew Best was born in about 1813 in Tadcaster, Yorkshire. He was the son of Robert and Ann Best^[1].

In 1848 he married Judith Hick in Tadcaster^[2][3] and they had 3 children: Robert (b.1850, d.1897), Tom (b.1854) and Phillis (b.1856, d.1879). Judith had a number of illegitimate children before her marriage: William (b.1835, d.1906), Mary Best (b.1845, d.1920), Michael (b.1841) and Matthew (b.1848, d.1896) - Mary and Matthew (at least) were probably her later husband's children.

Matthew died in 1872 in Tadcaster^[4].
