Biography

The profile for Martin Best has been created in order to link his two daughters Jane and Maria. They have living descendants whose DNA matches, and research is on-going to identify more descendants.

Martin Best was baptised in Merrington, Durham on 13 July 1780, his parents were Martin and Jane. [1]

His wife was called Hannah Kidd, they were married on 9 August 1802, in Norwich, St Augustine, Norfolk. [2]

Martin and Hannah lived in Taverham, Norfolk between 1804 and 1808, by 1811 they were living in Heworth, Durham, and then in 1814 in Merrington. Their next two children were baptised in Hutton Rudby, in 1817 and 1818.

Martin Best died in Hutton Rudby and was buried there on 10 February 1819, aged 38 [3]

Louisa Best was born in Taverham, Norfolk on 10 May 1804, and baptised there on 13 May 1804, her parents were Martin Best and Hannah (late Ried (Kidd)) [4]

Celia Best was born in Taverham on 12 January 1806, and baptised there on 19 January 1806, she was the daughter of Martin and Hannah (nee Kidd) [5]

Harriet Best was born in Taverham, Norfolk on 20 April 1807, and baptised there on 26 April 1807, her parents were Martin and Hannah [6]

Elizabeth Kidd Leman Best was born in Taverham on 23 November 1808, and baptised there on 27 November 1808, she was the daughter of Martin and Hannah (late Kidd) [7]

Maria Best was born in Heworth on 19 January 1811, and was baptised there on 13 April of the same year, her parents were Martin and Hannah [8] Maria's baptism entry shows her parents to be Martin Best of Merrington, Durham, and Hannah, the daughter of William Kidd of Weston, Norfolk. The family were living in Snowdens Hole, and Maria was their 5th child.

Jane Best was baptised in Merrington, Durham on 24 November 1814, her parents were Martin and Hannah [9]

Margaret Best was baptised in Hutton Rudby on 19 January 1817, she was the daughter of Martin and Hannah [10]

Ann Best was baptised in Hutton Rudby on 20 September 1818, her parents were Martin and Hannah. Martin is described as a papermaker [11]
