John was born in 1836. He was the son of Ann Whitman. He passed away in 1914.
John David Best is the son of William Best (1806-1871) and his wife Ann Augusta Whitman (1809- p.1880). He as born in Kings County, Nova Scotia and the family moved to Bath, Lincoln County, Maine. His mother Ann Augusta Whitman Best and his sister Amanda Fitzallen Best Fernald joined his family in Denver.
He is a descendant of William Best (1707-1782) and his wife Elizabeth, who hailed from Hampshire, England. "William, a master stone mason, whose name appears in the records of Fort Louisbourg in 1747." "When Louisbourg was returned to France, William Best and his close friend Sergeant John Burbidge, both originally from Hampshire, England moved with the rest of garrison to take part in the founding of Halifax." William was a member of the First House of Assembly in Halifax, and later moved to Cornwallis Township, Kings County, Nova Scotia, Canada.
