Biography

Son of James J Bester and Belle Silverman

Husband of Rosalind "Rolly" Goulko (actress)

Alfred Bester was well-known as a science fiction author, television and radio scriptwriter, magazine editor, and scripter for comic books and comic strips. He won the first ever Hugo Award in 1953 for his story "The Demolished Man". He was elected to the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame in 2001 and was named a Grand Master by the Science Fiction Writers of America in 1988.

He is one of the few men who can say they married Lois Lane, as his wife, Rolly Goulko, was the first woman ever to be the "voice" of Lois Lane on the radio. Early in their marriage, she retired from acting and became a Vice President, Casting Director, and Supervisor of the advertising agency Ted Bates & Co in New York City.

His comic book writing left its mark on even today's modern day storylines. He was the inventor of the current Green Lantern oath. He was the creator of the villainous Solomon Grundy. He often wrote for the Lee Falk comic strips such as Mandrake the Magician and The Phantom.

His short story and novel writing included titles such as his Hugo Award winning "The Demolished Man", "Who He?", "The Stars My Destination", and many others. He was also an editor and later senior editor of the magazine "Holiday" (travel/lifestyle magazine).

His wife Rolly passed away in 1984. Alfred passed away in 1987. They had no children together, and according to urban legend, he left all his remaining possessions to his bartender.
