Research Notes

  • The profile of Bestert-6:
A probate[4] was added on 17 Oct 2021 that brought the attached baptism into question. The spouse and children were supported by the probate, which additionally named Paul Bester and H de Klerk as parents. Bester-847 was identified as a possible duplicate and Andre found that this was supported by the SAG Register. [12] The attached baptism was moved to Anna (Bestert) Smit on 9 Nov 2021 as her probate supported the attachment of that baptism (date: 6 Aug 1796). A baptism dated 14 Dec 1777 was added to Bester-847 on 24 Oct 2021, which was supported by the probate as well as marital and children connections.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Anna by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Anna:

Bestert-6 and Bester-847 appear to represent the same person because: Hi

Despite the difference in baptism and birthdate, I think these two ladies need to be checked for possible duplicates. My research indicates that the baptism on Bestert-6 is incorrect (please view the probate on Bestert-6)

Hi Pam

It looks like you are correct, this is the extract from the SAG Register :

b3c9 Anna * 3.10.1777 ≈ Swartland 14.12.1777 † Strandstraat 13, Kaapstad 23.12.1840 x Kaapstad 10.8.1794 Remmert MUNSTERMANN v. Bremen, Duitsland † 9.9.1815 xx Kaapstad 25.2.1816 Christopher Smith HAYLETT * King’s Lynn, Norfolk 1.4.1767 † 8.1.1843 s.v. Thomas Haylett en Amy NN (hy xx 31.5.1841 Anna Dorothea Blatt), altesaam 11 kinders

Before you complete the merge, I suggest that the incorrect baptism is first transferred to the correct profile.

This is the father referred to in the baptism Andries Bester (1766-abt.1831). Daughter Anna's profile doesn't seem to exist as yet, so you may want to create it....

Thank you so much Andre, I will do that. I think she does exist already on WikiTree - see Anna (Bester) Smit (-1873).
Hi Pam, could you edit the children (in the bio) collatively please? I have now merged two profiles with two different dates of baptism; also sets of children that now have to be merged. If you are ready, André will attend to the protection at your request.

Hi John, could you also add the ‘’progenitor’’-project profile (wikitrees-cogh-stamouer-progenitorATgooglegroups.com) to the trusted list of this profile [Privacy Tab - add to trusted list, save, then activate, then save again] and then also activate it as active manager to this profile, please? As soon as the LNAB has been validated with a [transcription of a] baptism [image], we will have this profile Project Profile Protected).

Possible parents?
Helena (de Klerk) Coetsee (bef.1745-) and Poúlús Michiel Bester (bef.1731-1783), if so then her baptism is mentioned in the comments section of Poúlús'es Profile

If Remmert had died in 1815, she might have married Haylett, and then she would be a duplicate of Bester-847. Quite often probates / death notices can be incorrect and conflated. That is why baptisms serve as the first points of validation. The baptism mentioned here must be of another Anna Bester, a first or second cousin.

Bester-124 was the SV/PROG, and Bester-125 his child and Bester-122 his grandchild. The parents mentioned in the baptism of Bestert-6 belongs to Bester-122 and his spouse Brand-707, but the probate belongs to the other Anna with parents Paul Bester and H de Klerk.

Thank you so much Philip, this is wonderfully helpful info, and I'll keep hunting!

As you mentioned here, probates can be incorrect and conflated, but just so I don't loose my train of thought and can pick this up again tomorrow...here's an interesting probate that might help me find a marriage or two to help work out this puzzle: "South Africa, Cape Province, Probate Records of the Master of the High Court, 1834-1989," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSQF-M3RB-D?cc=2517051&wc=WV44-SZG%3A1598082380 : 27 April 2020), 007844946 > image 466 of 2135; Pietermaritzburg Archives (Formerly Natal State Archives), South Africa.

Now I just need a quick links page for marriages LOL

I think the baptism in this bio belongs to Anna Bester (-1873)

In this instance the DN might indicate the parents and the year of birth that should correspond roughly to the date of baptism.

Hi Everyone,

I have added a source for Anna's death, but her probate brings into question her baptism record, birth date and parents mentioned in bio. Would anyone like to double check this pretty please? The spouse and children are supported by the probate.

I think that Anna Bester (1777-) needs close inspection as a possible duplicate.
