William was born in 1848. He was the son of William Beswick and Elizabeth Whitwell.

In the 1851 England and Wales Census, Elizabeth is 31, the wife of Master Mariner & Ship Owner, living at Hinderwell Place, Scarborough, with

3 year old son William Whitwell Beswick who was born at Hutton Bushel, Yorkshire, and

1 year old daughter Jane Sutton Beswick born in Scarborough. ^[1]

The family emigrated to New Zealand.

Newspaper report
When giving evidence in an embezzlement case in June 1875 he stated his occupation as postmaster, and as a Sergeant in the Timaru Artillery Company. ^[4]
William Whitwell Beswick, Postmaster at Timaru, said that up till the 18th of April he was a member of the Timaru Artillery Company. In October last he held the rank of Sergt. Major. He was then in charge of the Corps.
