When giving evidence in an embezzlement case in June 1875 he stated his occupation as postmaster, and as a Sergeant in the Timaru Artillery Company.

William Whitwell Beswick, Postmaster at Timaru, said that up till the 18th of April he was a member of the Timaru Artillery Company. In October last he held the rank of Sergt. Major. He was then in charge of the Corps.
