John Bethune was born at Markinch in Fifeshire, Scotland on 3rd July 1847, the fourth child and second son of Robert Bethune and his wife Ann Lawrie. John was christ ened at the local church, although no date was recorded. [1]
After leaving school John trained as a chemist, although it's not yet been determined where he studied. This may well have been at Belfast in northern Ireland, as he married Sarah Scannin nee McClelland at the Donegall Square Methodist Church in Belfast on 2nd July 1872 … the day before his 25th birthday. Their Marriage Certificate reads …
"Married by licence on 2nd July 1872 in the Registrar’s District, Belfast, at Donegall Square East, Belfast, County Antrim … John Bethune, full age, bachelor, apothecary’s assistant, living at 5 Albion Street, Belfast; father Robert Bethune, builder; married to Sarah McClelland, full age, widow, living at 5 Albion Street, Belfast; father William McClelland, binding master. Marriage witnesses: James Bethune and Catharine McClelland [all four signed the register]."

John died at his home at 31 Crescent Terrace, Belfast on 27th April 1893 at the age of 45. The cause of his death was recorded as chronic dysentery and heart failure, and his death was apparently quite sudden. [2] He was buried at the City Cemetery in Belfast two days after his death … ie, on 29th April 1893. The record of his burial reads …
"John Bethune, last residence 31 Crescent Terrace, 46 [sic] years, died 27 April 1893, buried 29 April 1893; City Cemetery Grave section and number D 181; earth burial." [3]
