Joseph was the only son and fifth of six children of Joseph and Ana Smercina Betteken.[1] He grew up and attended school in St. Louis, Missouri.[2]
He married Mary Jane Reis and they are the parents of two children.[3]
He died in St. Louis at the age of 88.[4] He is buried in Resurrection Cemetery, Affton, Missouri.[5]
