John Bettes was born 22 September 1576 and baptized the following day. He was of the yeoman class.
The Betts family is mentioned in the Will of John Scotchford. 1600 (NEHGR 1084)
Death
John Betts died 7 August 1620 in West Peckham, Kent, England. He was buried there the following day.
His will (West Peckham, co. Kent, yeoman) was dated 24 Jan 1619/20 and proved 20 Aug 1620. He named his children who were under the age of 21, John, Robert, Thomas, Marie. His wife was executrix and given the residue after the childrens' bequests. Brothers Robert Saxbey of Yalding, co. Kent and Alexander Betts of West Peckham were overseers.[1]
Marriage
John Betts married, almost certainly, Mary Biggs about 1600. They had the following children:
John Betts, bpt at West Peckham 4 Jan 1600/1; was alive in 1619/20 at the time of his father's will, but presumably died without issue before 3 May 1638, since he was not mentioned in any of the Bigge wills. Therefore, he was not any of the John Bettses who immigrated to the New World.
Alexander Betts, 1603-1605
William Betts, 1605-1607
Mary Betts, 1610-bef 1638
Robert Betts, 1613
Thomas Betts, bpt 3 Dec 1615. Died at Norwalk, Connecticut, New England in 1688.
