Biography

This profile is part of the Betts Name Study.

Augustine was born in 1731. He passed away in 1813. He was mentioned in the will of his father, Robert Betts, dated 30 September 1733 and proved 1 November 1733:

...to my son Augustine Betts;[1]

He resided in Newtown, Queens and died in Albany, New York.[2] He married Keziah Wiggins and they were the parents of:[2]

  • Robert Betts
  • Richard Betts
  • Mellicent Betts

He was part of the Jamaica Company who "according to the Resolutions and Recommendations of the honourable the Continental and Provincial Congress" formed a company of Militia, choosing Ephraim Baylis as their Captain, Increase Carpenter as First Lieutenant, Abraham Vanansdall for Second Lieutenant, and Othniel Smith as Ensign.[3] His name also appeared on a list of signers of the Association in January 1776, formed at the suggestion of the Continental Congress, to support the Congress and Provincial Convention, comprised of men from Queens County, New York.[4]
