In 1850, Sarah, 54 and a widow, is living in Ben Smith District, Gwinnett Co, with three children, Jacob, 21, Martha, 12, and Joshua, 9. James had died after 1850. Jacob was a farmer. Sarah and Jacob could not read or write. The two younger children were in school. Sarah's loss of her husband was one of many sorrows. Sarah has no real estate value listed in the 1850 census. Had she lost her land also?

Sarah, 64, is living in 316th District; Gwinnett Co. Jacob Bradberry is living next door. He was a farmer living with his wife, Sarah Mobley, 32, and his daughters, Nancy, 8, and Sarah, 3, His sister, Martha, 21, her husband, Epharim B. Mobley, 24, and children, Sarah, 3, and James, 1, are living beside Jacob.

Then the War Between the States. Joshua Bradberry and his cousin, Ira H Betts, enlisted as privates in Company I, 16th Georgia Infantry, The Hutchins Guards, before 6 Mar 1861, a full month before the war began. The company was in Richmond Virginia 23 Jul 1861. Joshua, 20, died of disease at Richmond 14 Sep 1861.

His older brother, Jacob left his family and took up the cause. He enlisted as a private in Company H, 43rd Infantry Regiment Georgia on 10 Mar 1862. He was a POW in Vicksburg, MS 4-7 Jul 1863. He was soon released and returned to the battle. He died of disease 27 Nov 1863, probably in Chattanooga, TN. He was honored with Distinguished Service. One can only imagine the pain Sarah experienced at the loss of her sons.
