Ernest was born on 04 NOV 1874 in Baraboo, Sauk County, Wisconsin, USA. [1][2][3][4][5]
Adoption
Ernest was adopted on 30 NOV 1874 by Charles Archibald Betts and Mary Eleanor Ball in Baraboo, Sauk County, Wisconsin, USA. There have been no formal papers of adoption discovered. The date of the adoption comes from the family charts made by Ernest's youngest son Ernest Clair Betts Jr. in the 1980s.
No formal records exist to identify the birth family of Ernest. DNA testing done by several descendants have partially solved this unknown parentage. YDNA testing on his grandson Keith Weston Betts has yielded a plethora of strong matches to the Palmer family. Autosomal testing on Keith and several others narrowed the birth father down to being a son of Benoni Franklin Palmer and his wife Eliza Jane Denslow.
Updated DNA results:
As more autosomal matches come in the refinement of the identity of the birth-parents becomes clearer. While the father was originally thought to be a son of Benoni Palmer (based on matches to cousins of Eliza Denslow) closer matches to the descendants of Benoni's brother Ira puts the birth father as one of those boys. It seems that Eliza Denslow was related somehow to the birth mother, confusing the matter initially.
The birth-mother (at this point) seems to have very strong ties the the Bump-Griffith family of New York and Ohio.

I just reread your message from April 2. Feel free to add Ernest's genetic parents if you know who they were, as well as a note about the DNA testing you did.
FYI, I have Palmers in my own tree. Perhaps you would like to check to see if any of them are a common ancestor to the Palmers you have identified.
