Biography

Philippina Betz was baptized 18 June 1822 in Bingert (now Feilbingert), Rheinpfalz, Deutschland, the daughter of Johann Heinrich Betz and his wife Christina Dressel.[1]

Philippina Betz emigrated by the mid-1840s with her siblings and parents, settling in Buffalo, NY. She might be the Phillippina Betz, 22, listed on the ship Emerald, out of Le Havre to NYC 30 May 1844,[2] but she is listed as being age 22, four years off her documented birth year. No one on the list immediately near her that would tie her to Feilbingert. Her 1901 death certificate indicates she was in the country 64 years suggesting an 1837 emigration, but ship passenger records cannot verify this. More research is necessary.

Philippina Betz married first about 1844 a Mr. Schaefer. She was called "Philippina Schaefer" when she married her second husband George Adam Reitz on June 3, 1847. Location of her first marriage is unknown. Death date and location of Mr. Schaefer is unknown. There were no children from this marriage. Philippina may have immigrated with Mr. Schaufer, but we have no proof. More research is necessary.

Philippina Betz married secondly Georg Adam Reitz on June 3, 1847 at St. Paul & St. Mark’s Church in Buffalo, New York.[3]

Philippina Betz and Georg Adam Reitz had two sons,

  1. Peter Reitz, born about 1848, who later is known as Peter Reitz Schauf after his mother remarried. He married Caroline Wade or Wale and they lived with his widowed mother Philippina at 73 Brown Street in 1900, and probably in 1901 when his mother died..
  2. Adam Henry Reitz, born about July 20, 1849, and baptized Heinrich Adam Reitz on August 15, 1849 at St. Peter's E&R Church in Buffalo, Erie County, New York, who married Elizabeth? Schroeder and lived at 56 Brown Street in Buffalo, New York. His cousin Heinrich or Henry Betz, son of his uncle Heinrich Betz and his aunt Catherine Dern was baptized the same day in the same church. His aunt and uncle are likely Adam Henry Reitz's baptismal sponsors, but the record does not list them as such. Likewise, his parents are probably his cousins baptismal sponsors, but again no sponsors are listed.

Philippina Betz's second husband Georg Adam Reitz died about 1849, leaving Philippina a young widow with two babies, Peter Reitz and Adam Henry Reitz.

Philippina Betz married thirdly on 8 January 1850 Philip Leonhardt Schauf, a paver, who had at least one surviving child (Apollina Schauf and perhaps two (a brother Philip Schauf, Jr. who died young) from his first marriage to Anna Schick.

Philippina Betz and her third husband Philip Schauf had four children together:

  1. Catherina Dorathea (Dora) Schauf born late in 1850,
  2. Phillip Schauf, Jr. who died in infancy about 1854,
  3. Charles Schauf born 1856, who married Wilhelmina "Minnie" Bartel and bought a home on Monroe Street where they raised their several children.
  4. Julia Maria Schauf, born 1859 while the family lived on Moritmer Street. She married twice, first to tinsmith John Philipp Gantzer, who lived at 22 Monroe Street, and with whom she had four children, and secondly to August Wilhelm Erhardt Kellermann, an immigrant from Coburg, Deutschland, with whom she had three more children before passing away in May 1912.

Philippina Betz lived in Ward 4, Buffalo, NY. probably on Spring Street in 1850,[4] because her third husband Philipp Schauf is listed as living on Spring Street in the Buffalo City Directory.

Philippina Betz lived in Ward 6, Buffalo, NY. probably on Mortimer Street in 1860[5] because she is on Mortimer in the Buffalo City Directory.

Philippina Betz lived in Buffalo, NY in 1870,[6] probably at 73 Brown Street. This neighborhood was built during Reconstruction, in the years following the American Civil War. She stayed in this home the rest of her life and probably owned it.[7][8]

Her husband Philipp Schauf died 1 Apr 1878.[9]

Philippina Betz lived in ED 142, Buffalo, NY. at 73 Brown Street in 1880. She is listed Phillipine, head of household and age 62, widowed, and living with two sons, Peter Schauf, age 32, and Charles Schauf, age 23. [10]

Philippina Betz died 8 April 1901 at the Sisters Hospital of Charity, and is buried at Concordia Cemetery, Buffalo, New York.[11][12] Cemetery Preservation committee members are still trying to recover and restore buried and vandalized stones from this cemetery, and the work is ongoing.[13]
