Biography of George BETZ of 1852

George Betz was born about 1852 the son of Henry Betz and Catharina Dern of Buffalo, Erie County, New York, immigrants from the Darmstadt area of Deutschland, probably in or around the village of Feilbingert.

George Betz is one of several siblings:

  1. Heinrich "Henry" Betz, III, born July 20, 1849, and baptized August 15, 1849 in St. Peter's E&R Church, Buffalo, Erie County, New York.
  2. Catherine Betz, born November 20, 1850 in Buffalo, Erie County, New York who married Henry Weber, lived at 826 Genesse Street, and had at least four children.
  3. George Betz, born about 1852
  4. Johanna "Anna" Betz, born about 1854-1855
  5. Ferdinand Betz born about 1857 in Buffalo, Erie County, New York. who was still single at age 55, living with his older brother Henry in 1910, working as a Potter at 824 Genessee Street, and passed away in 1922.
  6. Elizabeth Betz, born about 1858 in Buffalo, Erie County, New York.
  7. Caroline Betz, born about 1860, who probably died young.
  8. Carl or Charles Betz, born about 1864 in Buffalo, New York

George Betz is enumerated on the 1860 United States Federal Census as George Betz, age 7 living with his grandfather, his parents and siblings in Buffalo, Erie County, New York. His grandmother is not present and may have passed away by 1860. His father Henry Betz, Jr. worked for the Census and enumerated his neighborhood. Henry Betz, Jr. is the enumerator (Census-taker) for at least part of Ward 7. (He enumerated Johannes Fassnacht & Regina Erhardt'sfamily...) George Betz, age 13, is enumerated on the 1865 New York State Census. His grandfather is no longer living with the family, and neither is his sister Caroline: 1865 NY State Census, 7th ward, p. 92:

George Betz lost his father Henry Betz, Jr. on July 1, 1876 following an accident in which his father severely injured his head.

There are two George Betzes in the 1900 census who are not the George above (not only because "our" George Betz died in 1893, but he would have been abt. 48, married 16 years with a wife, Margaret). These other two are:

  1. George, 33 Monroe, 42, m. Anna, fireman with niece Laura
  2. George, 528 Clinton, 26, m. Carrie, carpenter, m. 6 years; with daughter Mildred M. Betz.

Our George is likely the one who was buried at Concordia Cemetery on 7/26/1893 who went by the nickname "Davie" (which is also how he is identified on his Concordia record, although George on the tombstone)

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with George by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with George:
