By the 1910 United States census, Bernard was 40 years old and lived with wife Sarah (spelled Sara in the census) in East McKeesport, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He was the head of household, owned his house outright, and was a coremaker with Air Brake. He and Sarah had been married for fourteen years and had three living children out of five births. Living with them were children Gertrude M. (age 12), Richard E. (age 8), Howard A. (age 4), and Sarah's father, Hugh A. Diamond (age 74).
