Samuel Beverly, together with his brothers, Varnum Jr. and David, served in the War of 1812, and all three brothers took part in the battle of Plattsburg, NY. David, the youngest, was only 12 years old when he enlisted as a musician and was always called "the drummer boy." During the time that he was a resident of Whiting, Varnum Jr. lived on the south shore of Gardner's Lake, on a point of land opposite what is now [c1975] Lakeview Cabins and the Sherman Andrews residence. His son, Stephen, lived on the Theodore Hill farm. Samuel lived in the Halls Mills area, and David at Baileyville.
