Biography

Waqar H. Bhatti, Ph.D Passed away in Las Cruces, New Mexico, on Tuesday, January 18, 2011, with his wife and children at his side. He and his wife were long time residents of Carmel, Indiana, and were moving to Modesto, California, to be close to family. Dr Bhatti became ill during the trip to Modesto. Waqar H. Bhatti was born in Pakistan on November 22, 1931, to Hamid Khan Bhatti and Akhtar-un-Nisa Begum. He was a Professor Emeritus in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Butler University, Indianapolis, Indiana, where he taught pharmacy students for more than 38 years. He completed a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Biology in Pakistan and taught for several years in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Peshawar. In 1959 he came to the United States to pursue graduate studies in medicinal botany at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science. After completing his doctorate in Biology in 1963, he taught at the College of Pharmacy of North Dakota State University and was a research fellow in pharmacognosy at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1970 he joined the faculty of Butler University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. While serving on the faculty, he completed a Bachelors Degree in Pharmacy and then also worked as a hospital pharmacist. Dr Bhatti became a citizen of the United States; he honored both western and eastern cultures within his family, profession and the community. He was deeply committed to the pharmacy profession, teaching, and to all students. He delighted in meeting his former students especially when their children enrolled as students. During his career he taught many courses including History of Pharmacy, Radiopharmacy, Sterile Products, Pharmacognosy, Poisonous Plants, Analytical Techniques, Pharmaceutical Calculations, Nutraceuticals, OTC Products, and various aspects of medicinal chemistry. Dr Bhatti was fascinated by natural products, particularly plants, as a source for novel medicinal agents to treat diseases as well as to manage health and well being. He promoted the pharmacist's role in delivering integrative therapy through the combination of alternative and traditional medical practices. Dr Bhatti helped to establish an apothecary garden at Butler University. He conducted and published research, served as an invited speaker, was a plant toxicity consultant for the Poison Control Center, mentored high school science students, and actively served in national and local pharmacy organizations.
