Charles married Catherine Adele Brian on 17 December 1868 in New Orleans, Louisiana. They were the parents of the poet and playwright, Eloise Bibb Thompson.

He served in the war of the rebellion and was associated in politics with ex Gov. P.B.S. Pinchback. For forty years, Mr. Bibb served as an Inspector of United States Customs and "amassed a good fortune through his economu and business sagacity." He left his only child, Eloise, real estate and securities amounting to $75,000.
