Biography

This profile is part of the St Helens, Lancashire One Place Study.

Thomas Bibby was born in about 1823 in Prescot, Lancashire. He was the son of Ralph and Ellen Bibby.

Thomas' father died in 1839, and was buried on 13 Jan 1839 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. His age was recorded as 42, and his address as Prescot. Thomas' mother married John Cross, or lived with him as a couple - no record of the marriage has yet been found.

By June 6th 1841, Thomas was living in New Road, Prescot with his mother and stepfather. He was an apprentice watchmaker.

Thomas married Elizabeth Burns on 28 Dec 1846 at St Peter's Church in Liverpool, Lancashire. Neither had been married before. Thomas was of full age (21 or more) and a watch maker; he lived in St Anne Street. Elizabeth was a minor, and lived in Rodney Street. Their fathers were named as Ralph Bibby (watch maker) and James Burns (labourer). The witnesses were Owen Burns and Hannah Burns.

Their daughter Ellen was born in about 1848 in Prescot, Lancashire.[1]

Their daughter Ann was born in about 1850 in Prescot, Lancashire.[2]

By March 30th 1851, the family was living in Taylors Square, Eccleston. Thomas' wife's name was recorded as Bridget, not Elizabeth, but it appears to be the right family so perhaps one of her names was a middle name. Thomas was a watch maker.

Their son James was born in 1852 in Eccleston, Lancashire.[3]

Their son Richard was born in 1854 in Eccleston, Lancashire.[4]

Their daughter Ann was born in 1856 in Eccleston, Lancashire.[5]

Their son John was born in about 1861 in Eccleston, Lancashire.[6]

By April 7th 1861, the family was living in St Helens Road, Eccleston. Thomas' wife's name was recorded as Bridget, not Elizabeth, but it appears to be the right family so perhaps one of her names was a middle name. Thomas was a labourer; baby John was 4 months old.

Their daughter Sarah was born in about 1864 in Prescot district, Lancashire.[7]

Thomas married Jane Burns on 22 Aug 1870 at St Thomas' church in Eccleston, Lancashire. Both were living in Eccleston; Thomas was a 41-year-old widowed labourer, Jane was 40 and hadn't been married before. Their fathers were named as Ralph Bibby (watchmaker) and Richard Burns (labourer). The witnesses were John Scott and Mary Little.
