Biography

Joseph Bickham was born in Ashburton, Devon in 1817 and baptised on the 23rd February 1818. He was the son of Walter Bickham and Jane his spouse.^[1]

• In the 1841 census - Joseph appears to have been living in a Boarding House in Ashburton, before later moving to Plymouth.

• In the 1861 census the family had been transcribed as BRICKHAM instead of as Bickham

• In the 1871 census - Joseph was working as a Stable Man. But in the 1861 census he was called a Horseler and in the 1851 census he was an Ostler.

• An Ostler was more than just a stable man. He was in charge of the yard or stables. He did not do much direct work with the horses, just opened the gates for clients and saw the horses were produced when required. Usually he was paid more than the other stable staff and had worked his way up to the job. He would have lived at or very near the stables.

• In the 1881 census, Joseph and his wife Mary were living with their daughter Ellen and her new husband Thomas Stephens.

• Joseph died before the 1891 census.
