Lawrence was born in 1909. He was the son of Oscar Bie and Josephine Elise (Andreasdtr) Monsen. In the 1910 census Lawrence (age 1) is living in Collingswood, New Jersey with his parents and siblings: Eleanor (age 5), Gertrude (age 8), Marguarite (age 5), and Oscar (age 1). There is also a "servant" named Amy Hunt.
Lawrence's mother passed away in 1915. His father remarried in 1917 to Inga Sofie Hillestad (2 Jan 1882 - 9 Feb 1958). In the 1920 census Lawrence is age 10 living in Englewood, Bergen County, New Jersey with his father and stepmother Inga, his siblings: Elinor [sic] (age 23), Gertrude (age 20), Margaret (age 18), Oscar (age 14), and Norman (age 8), and Thea Hillestad (listed as cousin).
Within a few years after that, Lawrence's father had returned to Norway where he passed away in 1923. In the 1930 census Lawrence is living in Portsmouth, Virginia with his brother Oscar, his 'stepmother' Inga, and his younger brothers Norman (age 19) and Thomas (age 8). Thomas had been born in Norway about a year before their fathers death. In the 1940 census Lawrence (age 33) is still living in Portsmouth City, Virginia with his stepmother Inga and brothers Norman (age 29) and Thomas (age 18). Also in the household were married boarders, Lloyd and Monica Huffman.
When WWII broke out all of the brothers but Oscar went in the service, Lawrence and Norman in the Navy and Tommy in the Air Force. Because of his fluent Norwegian, Lawrence was taken into Naval Intelligence and was responsible for mapping the very long coast of Norway (fjords and all) and identifying German fortifications. He would go to the docks when a Norwegian ship came in and could speak easily with the young Norwegian boys from all over the country. In that way he gathered information from them. Based on his map, it was a ‘no go’ for invading Norway. He was stationed then in Norfolk. One account says he became a CIA agent who spent much time in the Pacific after WWII. But that's in question. Lawrence married Carol Melanie Wetteland in about 1952. She had been married twice before and had a son Eric by her first husband.
Larry passed away in 1991. He and his wife Carol left their remains to medical science. Larry's brother Tommy had stone markers for Larry and Carol placed in Harleigh Cemetery, Collingswood, New Jersey.
