Biography

Samuel Bien was christened November 16, 1794, in the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, in Lebanon, Lebanon county, Pennsylvania, the son of Abraham and Susanna Bien. [1]

Samuel was one of the settlers of the town of Lebanon, in Warren county, Ohio. The area of the village was first settled in 1811. Among the early settlers were Samuel Bean, Jacob and Abraham Beals and Frederick Bysel. Bysel is believed to have built the first house in what is now the village and kept the first tavern and post office. The village of West Lebanon [Ohio] was laid out in 1833 by Phillip Groff and the Rev. William Butt in 48 lots, all along the main street. Groff named the town for his home county in Pennsylvania. A plaque was erected in West Lebanon commemorating the founding, in memory of the coal miners who founded the community in 1833. The placque is mounted on sandstone taken from a step of Ed Geis' old blacksmith shoppe. The Evangelical Lutheran Church, the village's first church, was built in 1836. The first minister was John Beck, followed later by the Rev. Bordner. [2]

Samuel "Bean" is found on the United States Census of 1840, living in Turtle Creek Township, Warren county, Ohio. His son, Samuel was born May 22, 1810 in Lebanon county, Pennsylvania, and was living in Turtle Creek Township, with his wife Mary and his son, William H. Bean, who was born the year of the census. The 1840 census does not contain names, however, it appears as if the younger Samuel is living in the household with his father. The original document can be seen on the website of the Church of the Latter Day Saints (The Mormans) and shows that there is one male under the age of five, one male, age 10-15, one male age 30-40, and one female, age 20-30. [3]

Samuel died in 1852 and is buried in the Dodds Cemetery, in Lebanon, Warren county, Ohio [4]

Researcher's Notes

Although he was christened in 1794, Samuel was more than likely born before 1788, based on the age of his wife and the birth of their children.
