Biography

Activists and Reformers poster
Albert Bigelow was a part of the Civil Rights Activist Movement.

Albert Bigelow was a United States Navy Commander during World War II, and pacifist who came to prominence in the 1950s as the skipper of the Golden Rule, the first vessel to attempt disruption of a nuclear test in protest against nuclear weapons. In 1961, Albert and his wife joined the Congress on Racial Equality (CORE) which organized the Freedom Rides through the Southern United States to challenge racist policies. He rode in the first bus with John L. Lewis and defended Lewis when a white mob attacked the bus.

Albert was the son of Albert Francis and Gladys Williams Bigelow. Albert Sr. was a partner in the firm Warren, Hogue & Bigelow in Boston. Albert was the second of 4 children. His sisters were Martha, born in 1905, and Gladys, born in 1910, and his twin brother, Hugh W.
