Biography

Lillian Stuart Biggar was born on May 19, 1867 in Hendersonville, North Carolina. Her parents were Robert H. Biggar and Martha Elizabeth "Bessie" Davies.

Lillian appears in the 1896 Asheville, North Carolina City Directory, living in her mother's household and working as a travel agent. Four years later, she was living in Augusta, Georgia with two of her sisters and working as a dressmaker. A 1902 advertisement in The Atlanta Constitution says she makes undergarments "special designs to correct stout, thin, stooping, and delicate figures".

Lillian married Charles S. Blackmar on December 19, 1905 in Columbia, Missouri.

Lillian died at her sister's home in Augusta, Georgia on April 22, 1922. She is buried with the rest of her family in Westover Memorial Park cemetery.

Research Notes

Lillian's death certificate and burial information styles her name "Lillian Biggar Stuart", but Stuart was originally her middle name. I cannot find her married to anyone except Charles Blackmar, and they appear to be living apart by 1910. There is no mention of him in her obituary, or of the name "Blackmar" at all. Did she change her surname to "Stuart" after her marriage broke down? - Freeth-52 16:26, 22 September 2016 (EDT)

Lillian also seems to be missing from the census records beyond 1900. Closest thing I could find was a "Lillian Biggar" listed in the 1920 U.S. Census working as a teacher in Ellis, Texas. She is single, said to be from Virginia, and living with another woman named Emma Henderson whose parents are from Kentucky and Georgia respectively. Lillian's obituary says that she once worked as a teacher. Could this be her? More research is needed. - Freeth-52 16:26, 22 September 2016 (EDT)
