Biography

Sarah was born some time between about 1690 and 1705, probably in or near Isle of Wight County, Virginia. The issue regarding her likely birth year and parentage is very complex because some of the material found online about her is inconsistent and/or impossible to square with the known facts about her husband.

Notably, on FamilyTree, she was (until today) shown at Sarah "Edwards Underhill Briggs Jarratt," the daughter of Charles Edwards who left a will in 1713/4 naming a daughter Sarah Briggs, a grandchild surnamed Briggs, and a James Briggs (relationship not specified). Some people believe that Mr. Briggs died a few years later, whereupon this Sarah (Edwards) Briggs married Nicholas Jarratt Jr. in 1721. Perhaps so, but as shown in the Wikitree profile on Nicholas Jarratt Sr., Nicholas Jr. would have been too young to have married, consistent with the mores of the times, a woman in 1721 who had already been married no later than 1711 or 1712 (and was therefore born by 1696 at the latest).

Further, this Sarah was shown on FamilyTree (and on the FindaGrave page on which the FamilyTree profile was based) as having been the daughter of a woman born in 1640. That woman's child-bearing years would have ended by 1688 at the latest. This would place Sarah (Edwards) Briggs Jarratt (if the wife of Nicholas Jr. were really the daughter of Charles Edwards) at about an age point where she could have been the wife of Nicholas Jarratt SENIOR, but not of his son.

Consequently, I am posting this biography not in order to resolve all questions about the wife of Nicholas Jarratt Jr., but rather in order to highlight questions that need answers, at least before anyone should accept the relationships as presented in Sarah's FindaGrave profile.
