Biography
John Bigham is Notable.
- John Charles Bigham, 1st Viscount Mersey, PC (1840-1929) the second son of John Bigham, a prosperous merchant, and his wife Helen, née East.
- He was admitted to Middle Temple in 1870 entitled to practise as a barrister.
- He married Georgina Sarah Rogers, daughter of John Rogers, on the17th of August 1871.
- He was appointed Queen's Counsel (Q.C.) in 1883.
- He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Liverpool Exchange between 1895 and 1897.
- He was appointed Knight in 1897
- He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1909.
- He was raised to the peerage as Baron Mersey, of Toxteth in the County Palatine of Lancaster, in 1910.
- He died aged 89 on the 3rd of September 1929
- He is probably best remembered for heading the official Board of Trade inquiries into the sinking of steamships, most notably the RMS Titanic, the RMS Lusitania, and the RMS Empress of Ireland.
