Biography

Born Regn. No. 8737/1855 Sandhurst (Victoria). 1855 Australia

Died 27 AUG 1911.

Event: Marriage Note: Description: Regn. No. 3941 (Victoria) To Ernest Frederick William John Schutze. 1876

Caroline was born in 1855 in Sandhurst (Bendigo) Victoria. Passed away on August 27, 1911 in Zell, Germany (according to probate papers).

Probate for Caroline Bignell Schutze was granted 11 February 1913, Victoria. Was naturalised German citizen at time of death. Probate documents state that she died in Zell, Germany, August 27, 1911. Note that Zell (on river Mosel) and Wurzburg are about 260 km apart by road. However, a municipality of Wurzburg called Zell am Main (5 minutes train travel from central Wurzburg on the river Main) is the more likely place of death.

Husband John was a partner in Schutze, Steffens & Co, shipping agents and importers, 18 Collins St, Melbourne. They sold their family home Westella, 27 Lewisham Road, Windsor, in 1904 and moved to Germany, where son Gus (August) had taken out German citizenship so that he could conduct the family business from there (see pp. 84-85 of "More Ha'pence Than Kicks", by Henrietta Leslie, Caroline's daughter-in-law). Husband John's location in 1921 at time of death was Wurzburg, Germany. So Caroline lived there, and their other son, bacteriologist Peter (Harrie Leslie Hugo) was studying/working there in 1911 at the Institute of Hygiene as assistant to a Professor Lehmann. He was awarded the degree of Doctor of Medicine there in 1907. Henrietta Leslie says she met Caroline in the Spring of 1911 at Rapallo, northern Italy, and commented that she was very ill at that time.
