William was born 14 February 1816. He was the son of John Quick Bignell and Elizabeth Brown.

In 1842, he was working as a Public Notary, single, and living Notre-Dame, Quebec City, Quebec.

On 12 September 1843, at the age of 27, he married Emma Palmer Shaw, aged 18, in the Wesleyan Methodist Church, Quebec City, Quebec.

Together the couple had 15 children.
In 1851, at the age of 36, he was a Notary, living in Quebec City, with his wife (Emma), Peter Shaw (Law Student, possible brother in law) and children (Emma, Annie, William, Henry and Jessie).

In 1861, at the age of 45, he was a Notary, living in Quebec City (Montcalm Ward), with his wife (Emma) and children (Wm., Annie, Jessie, Charles, Favie, and Arthur)

In 1871, at the age of 55, he was a Notary Public, living in Quebec City (Montcalm Ward), with his wife (Emma) and children (Annie, Jessie, Charles, Arthur, Grace, Edward, Herbert, Etties and Florence),

In 1881, at the age of 66, he was living in Quebec City (Montcalm Ward), with his wife (Emma) and children (Annie, Arthur, Grace, Herbert, Ella and Florence).

In 1891, at the age of 75, he was a Notary, living in Quebec City (Montcalm West Ward), with his wife (Emma) and children (Annie, Charles, Arthur, Edward Grace, Herbert, Ethel and Florence).

William Bignell passed away 21 June 1895, aged 79. He was buried 24 June 1895 in Mount Hermon Cemetery, Sillery, Quebec City, Quebec, Canada.
