Thomas Bilbrough was born on September 21, 1831 in Gildersome, Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom, the youngest child of James Bilbrough and Ellen, née Priestley. [1][2]
Thomas Priestley Bilbrough was born on 21 Sep 1831 in Gildersome, West Riding Yorkshire.[3]
Thomas Priestley Bilbrough and Gertrude Elizabeth Bates were married on 16 May 1860 in St Mary, West Derby, Lancashire, England.[4]
Four years after his marriage, in the 1861 census, [9]he is described as a 'Wool Broker', but on 5 August 1864, the wool broker partnership he had with one Malcolm Greame, in Liverpool, was dissolved. [10] He continued to work alone as a wool broker from the Public Saleroom at 14, Cook St., Liverpool, where, for example, on 10 August 1866, he was offering 370 bales of wool from East India.[11]In the mid 1800s, Indian wool was less important than cotton. Between 1840 and 1849, 75 million lbs of cotton was imported from India; by 1857, the amount of wool imported was only 19,341,021 million lbs. In 1844, sheep wool from India amounted to 3% of total British wool imports. By 1857, its importance to the British market had increased, when 15% of imported wool came from India.[12]
On 2 November 1870, Thomas was still a wool broker and selling 800 bales of East Indian wool from The Temple on Dale Street.[13]The following 20 May, the Liverpool Daily Post reported that Thomas P. Bilbrough would be offering 800 bales of East Indian wool from The Temple on Friday 26 May. [14]
In the 1891 census, on 5 April, Thomas and Gertrude were not living in the same place. Thomas and his daughter Gertrude Winifred were living at no. 305, Edge Lane, West Derby with one servant, Elizabeth Jones; visiting them, at least that Sunday night, was Thomas' nephew, George E. Knott.
