Frederick was born in 1896. He was the son of Thomas Billing and Emma Jane McKoy.[1]
Private Frederick Roland (sp?) Billing, Service number 22927 served with the Army in WW1. A blacksmith in civilian life before enlistment, he gave his next-of-kin as Thomas John Billing (father), Hine Street, New Plymouth, Taranaki. He embarked from Wellington on 27 May 1916 aboard HMNZT 54 "Willochra" or HMNZT 55 "Tofua" with the 4th Reinforcements, 3rd Battalion, G Company, of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade. He later transferred to the New Zealand Machine Gun Corps, and was killed in action on 16 November 1916 at the Somme, Northern France. He is buried at Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, in Armentieres, France grave reference III. B. 15 [2]
He passed away in 1916 age 20 [3] His death was included in the casualty list published in the Otago Daily Times , Issue 16866, 1 December 1916, Page 3. His brother Ernest also died at the Somme, later during the war
