Biography
Sarah Billings was born at Acton, Massachusetts on April 24, 1755, daughter of Jonathan Billings and Dorothy Brooks. [1]
She married Josiah Davis at Acton on September 17, 1782. Josiah was born at Acton, Massachusetts on June 14, 1755, son of Ezekiel Davis and Mary Gibson. [1] [2]
Josiah died on April 27, 1798. [1] He is buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery at Acton where his inscription reads: In Memory of Mr. Josiah Davis who died April 27, 1798 Aged 42.[3]
On June 9, 798, widow Sarah Davis petitioned the court to have Aaron Jones (likely her brother-in-law) appointed administrator of Josiah's estate, who died intestate, which was granted. [4]
A committee was appointed to inventory Josiah's real estate and set off one third as widow's dower, during Sarah's lifetime. The real estate was assessed at $950.00 and real estate valued at $ 316.66 was set off with the approval and acceptance of widow Sarah, and Joseph Brown, as guardian to the children. Josiah's personal estate was valued at $206. [4]
On June 12, 1798, Joseph Brown was appointed guardian to the minor children of Josiah Davis of Acton, deceased, being under the age of 14 years, viz:
- Josiah, Luther, Jonathan Billings, Silas and Dorothy Davis [5]
On June 11, 1798, Sally Davis, minor over the age of 14 years, daughter of Josiah Davis, of Acton, deceased, chose Joseph Brown of Acton as her guardian. [6]
On June 17, 1808, Silas Davis, minor above the age of 14 years, son of Josiah Davis, deceased, chose Winthrop Faulkner, Esq. of Acton, as his guardian. [5]
On July 29, 1808, Jonathan Billings Davis, minor above the age of 14 years, chose Winthrop Faulkner, Esq. of Acton, as his guardian. [5]
On December 3, 1808, Dorothy Davis, minor above the age of 14 years, chose Winthrop Faulkner, Esq. of Acton, as her guardian. [5]
