AN OLD CITIZEN GONE.
Elijah Billingsley, second son of Wm. R. and Sarah B. Billingsley,wasborn in Belmont Co., Ohio, Jan. 32, 1818. In the sixth year of hisagehis parents moved to Harrison County (Ohio) and settled ongovernmentland, where Elijah attended school and helped in opening upthewilderness. His parents were Quakers and he had a birthright intheSociety which was continued until 1839, when he joined the M.E.Church.He was married to Prudence Strong Dec. 29th 1841, and in thefollowingMay removed to Iowa territory, settling at his late residence inRoundPrairie township in the spring of 1843. He died Dec. 22d, 1894 at4:30a.m., aged 76 years, 11 months and 1 day. His wife died January12th,1872. By her he had eight children. W.R., the eldest, grew tomanhood onthe farm; he enlisted in Company G, Thirtieth Iowa, in August1862, anddied at Helena, Ark., in January following. Sara J., asuccessfulteacher, died at her home Oct. 12th 1871; Mary C., died inearlychildhood; Mrs. Lizzie Gregg, Samuel, and Florence B. Litton live inthisvicinity; James S., Belleville, Kansas, and Mrs. M.B. Mills,Ottumwa,Iowa, are practicing physicians.
His second wife was Penina Turner, and their marriage occurredJanuary29th 1874. Of this union two children were born, the eldest dyingininfancy; Mattie resides on the farm. His second wife survives him. Heandhis first wife were active members of the church and aided inorganizingthe first class and building the first M.E. church in Glasgowas well asthe present one. He has filled various offices in church,township andcounty with satisfaction to all. His religious training, inconnectionwith his habits of industry and economy, made him a friend tohis fellowmen. He helped the needy and relieved the distressed.
Billilngsley, E., farmer and stock-raiser, Sec. 24; P.O. Glasgow; borninBelmont Co., Ohio, in 1818; came to Jefferson Co. in 1842, and hassincebeen engaged in farming and stock-raising. Mr. B. had eight childrenbyhis first wife Sarah J., Prudence (now Mrs. Gregg), Samuel, JamesS.,Florence, Margaret R., William R. (died in 1857); present wife,PrudenceStrong, was born in Jefferson Co., Ohio, in1820. Mr. B. owns 240acresof land, valued at $30 per acre. Held office of County Supervisortwoyears; Township Superintendent of County Board four years, and heldmostof the township offices. Members of the M.E. Church; Republican.
