Note: 2012: DUMMERSTON, VT - Leon Bruce Bills, Jr., 89 of West River Road died peacefully Tuesday morning, November 20, 2012 at Pine Heights Nursing Home following a period of declining health. Mr. Bills was born at home in West Wardsboro on March 25, 1923 the son of Leon B. and Sadie (Underwood) Bills. He grew up in Wardsboro where he attended local schools. A veteran of World War II he proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy stationed in the Pacific Theater of Operation. He served from 1944 until his honorable discharge in 1946. For 30 years he owned and operated Leon Bills Auto Repair Garage on Route 30 in Newfane. Prior to establishing his own business he had managed L&L Service Center, a full service gas station located in East Jamaica. In his earlier years he drove both logging and lumber trucks making deliveries in Massachusetts and Connecticut. For several years he had also been employed at Pratt & Whitney in West Hartford, Connecticut. He held membership in the Valley Lions Club where he had served as president and was a member of the American Legion, Townshend Post #16 and the V.F.W. Carl M. Dessaint Post #1034 in Brattleboro. Mr. Bills was a longtime member of the Newfane Congregational Church where he had served on the building committee. With his wife he enjoyed square dancing and was a member of the Green Mountain Squares and the Honey Bee Square Dance Club of Deland, Florida. He preferred warm weather and for many years wintered in Central Florida with his wife. He enjoyed the outdoors including hunting and fishing. A devoted family man he cherished time spent with his family especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mr. Bills was also an avid Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan. He was first married to Ethel Grindlay in Brattleboro on December 22, 1943. The marriage ended in divorce. He later married Marlene Westine on July 12, 1958 at the Newfane Congregational Church. Besides his faithful and loving wife of 54 years he leaves four sons, Bruce and Margaret Bills of Townshend, Craig Bills of Brattleboro, Brett and Vickie Bills of Newfane and Randy and Tina Bills of Brookline, two daughters, Darlene and Charles Dougherty of Port St. Lucie, Florida and Kelley and Christopher Pluff of Newfane. Additionally he is survived by two sisters, Leona Fuller of Barre and Doris Clark of Ludlow, Vermont, 13 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by one grandson Connor Barry, six sisters and three brothers. A memorial service in celebration of his life will be conducted Thursday 11292012 at 2 p.m. at the Newfane Congregational Church with Pastor Rob Hamm officiating. [1]
